Understanding the difference between commonly confused words will help you avoid making errors in English usage. Let’s examine the difference between the following:
accept
To accept is to consent to receive something, to agree to, to regard something with approval, or to concede or admit responsibility. Accept is a verb only.
Denise accepted the vase as a housewarming gift.
When Sheila married Tom, she was warmly accepted into his family.
except
To except something is to exclude it or leave it out. Except is often found as a preposition meaning “not including” or “other than.” It can also be a conjunction.
Club members will be excepted from having to go through the audition process again.
The bakery is open every day except Mondays.
☛ To help you remember the difference between accept and except, link the word accept in your mind to the word acceptance, and the word except with the word exception, as in an exception to the rules. Also, if you can substitute either exclude or excluding in your sentence, the word you want is except, not accept.
The bakery is open every day excluding Mondays.
